Objectives
The WISE Board provides independent strategic advice to strengthen SEA4FUTURE's scientific quality, stakeholder engagement and long-term impact, supporting the successful implementation and uptake of project outcomes.
SEA4FUTURE brings together a diverse consortium of 22 partners from across Europe, uniting expertise in marine science, fisheries, technology, policy, and community engagement.
SEA4FUTURE is helping drive the transition towards more sustainable, resilient, and ecosystem-based fisheries in the Mediterranean. By combining scientific research, innovative technologies, and the knowledge of fishers and coastal communities, the project develops practical solutions that support both marine biodiversity and sustainable livelihoods.
The Mediterranean is one of the world's most biodiverse seas, but it faces growing pressures from overfishing, climate change, habitat degradation, pollution, and increasing socio-economic challenges. These pressures threaten marine ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. SEA4FUTURE responds to these challenges through a collaborative approach that connects science, fisheries, policy, and society to develop solutions that work in real-world conditions.
SEA4FUTURE brings together researchers, fishers, policymakers, industry stakeholders, and coastal communities to co-design and test innovative approaches for sustainable fisheries. The project combines ecosystem monitoring, citizen science, advanced modelling, and technological innovation to improve understanding of marine ecosystems and support evidence-based decision-making.
Fishers play a central role throughout the project, contributing their knowledge and experience to the development and testing of new fishing practices, gears, and technologies. This collaborative approach helps ensure that solutions are practical, effective, and adapted to local realities.
SEA4FUTURE focuses on three interconnected objectives:
Understanding marine ecosystems by improving data collection, monitoring fisheries and environmental conditions, and strengthening knowledge of marine health and human impacts.
Developing smarter fishing solutions by testing innovative technologies and practices that improve fishing selectivity, reduce bycatch, and minimise environmental impacts.
Turning knowledge into action by translating scientific evidence into practical tools, recommendations, and decision-support systems for fishers, managers, and policymakers.
Beyond activities at sea, SEA4FUTURE supports sustainability across the entire seafood value chain. The project contributes to stronger fisheries management, more effective Marine Protected Areas and Fisheries Restricted Areas, and greater visibility for sustainably sourced Mediterranean seafood.
By connecting innovation, collaboration, and science-based solutions, SEA4FUTURE aims to create lasting benefits for marine ecosystems, fisheries, and coastal communities across the Mediterranean.
The Weaving Innovations for Sustained Ecosystems (WISE) Board is a SEA4FUTURE's strategic advisory board, bringing together up to ten internationally recognised experts to strengthen the project's scientific excellence, stakeholder engagement and real-world impact.
By providing independent advice, facilitating knowledge exchange and connecting the consortium with key end users and decision-makers, the Board supports the co-design, dissemination and uptake of innovative solutions for sustainable Mediterranean fisheries.
The WISE Board provides independent strategic advice to strengthen SEA4FUTURE's scientific quality, stakeholder engagement and long-term impact, supporting the successful implementation and uptake of project outcomes.
Bringing together internationally recognised experts in marine ecology, fisheries, governance, conservation and innovation, the Board offers multidisciplinary expertise to guide the project's scientific and technical developments.
The Board promotes knowledge exchange between science, industry, policymakers and coastal communities, helping ensure that SEA4FUTURE solutions are relevant, applicable and responsive to real societal needs.
The WISE Board supports transparent, evidence-based and inclusive decision-making, encouraging collaboration across disciplines, sectors and countries while fostering responsible and sustainable ocean stewardship.
Comprising internationally recognised experts in marine science, fisheries, policy and innovation, the WISE Board provides independent advice to maximise the scientific quality, societal relevance and long-term impact of SEA4FUTURE.
