The University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) contributes to SEA4FUTURE through its expertise in sustainability assessment, life cycle thinking and circular economy approaches applied to marine and fisheries systems. Within the project, USC leads WP6, focused on assessing the environmental, economic and social sustainability of SEA4FUTURE solutions and on improving eco-labels and certification schemes for the marine and fisheries sector. USC coordinates the development of Environmental Life Cycle Assessment (E-LCA), Life Cycle Costing (LCC) and Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA), supporting the definition of system boundaries, data collection needs, life cycle inventories and the identification of sustainability hotspots and improvement opportunities. Furthermore, USC contributes to the analysis of existing eco-labels and certification schemes, aiming to identify gaps and propose improvements aligned with current sustainability, circularity, regulatory and policy objectives. Through these activities, USC supports the integration of robust sustainability criteria into future fisheries management and value chain solutions.

María Teresa Moreira Vilar – PhD in 1997, Full Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), where she has developed her academic career. Her research focuses on environmental biotechnology and sustainability, including enzyme biocatalysis, enzyme immobilization, enzymatic reactors for pollutant degradation, advanced oxidation processes, life cycle assessment, eco-design, and circular economy. Internationally recognized, she has participated in numerous European research projects and serves as co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Cleaner Production.

Gumersindo Feijoo Costa - Obtained his degree in Chemistry from the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) in June 1990, where he began his research career through competitive scholarships, including the Research Staff Training Programme of the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science. He completed his PhD and defended his thesis in May 1994. Since then, he has developed an academic career at USC, starting as Assistant Professor in 1994, being accredited as Full Professor of Chemical Engineering in 2007, and appointed Full Professor in 2008. His research has focused on enzymatic reactor modelling and applications to the biodegradation of toxic compounds (PAHs, dyes and pesticides), Life Cycle Assessment and life cycle management, as well as circular economy, ecolabelling and ecodesign.

Sofía Estévez Rivadulla - Graduated in Chemical Engineering in 2019 with a degree extraordinary price and obtained a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering and Bioprocesses in 2021. She completed her PhD in Chemical and Environmental Engineering in July 2025. Her research has focused on the analysis, modelling, scaling and design of wastewater treatment facilities across different scales, functions, wastewater compositions and industrial sectors. Her work emphasizes resource recovery and circular economy approaches, aiming to generate transferable knowledge for the development of sustainability indicators, methodological frameworks for the water sector, and environmental impact assessment using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Since September 2025, she has been working as a research associate at the CRETUS research centre, part of the CIGUS network funded by the Xunta de Galicia (regional Spanish goverment).

Adrián Sobral Lores - PhD student at the University of Santiago de Compostela and a member of the Cross-disciplinary Research in Environmental Technologies Research Centre (CRETUS), under the supervision of Professor María Teresa Moreira. He holds a degree in Environmental Sciences and a Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering. His research is mainly related to blue economy sectors, particularly fisheries and aquaculture, and focuses on the application of life cycle assessment to analyse the environmental performance of these systems. Within this project, he contributes to the collection, compilation and organization of life cycle inventory data, supporting the development of life cycle assessment studies and the sustainability evaluation of fisheries-related activities.

Raúl Romasanta Sanmiguel - PhD student at the University of Santiago de Compostela, affiliated with the Cross-disciplinary Research in Environmental Technologies Research Centre (CRETUS), under the supervision of Professor María Teresa Moreira. He holds a degree in Chemical Engineering and a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering and Bioprocesses. His research focuses on life cycle-based sustainability assessment of fisheries systems, integrating environmental, economic and social dimensions to support more sustainable and resilient marine value chains. He is currently carrying out his predoctoral research within the SEA4FUTURE project, working on primary data collection, life cycle assessment development and the assessment of fisheries-related systems.
