The Region of Crete is a Public Law Entity, a local self-government authority of Greece (NUT II) organized and operated according to the Greek Law 3852/2010 “Kallikratis Program” and offers services for the benefit of the citizens. It consists of 6 General Directorates and 36 Directorates that aim at Economic, Social and Cultural Development of the Island of Crete and regarding the Development, Development Planning, Environment and Infrastructure, Regional Agricultural Economy and Veterinary Services, Transport and Communications, Public Health and Social Care, Civil Protection and Defense, as well as Internal Function. It designs, plans and implements policies at regional level as part of its responsibility, in terms of the sustainable development and social cohesion of the country, taking into account National and European Policies.

RoC plays an important role in both WP3: Multi-scale and Multi-Gear Innovative Technologies and WP4: Advanced Spatiotemporal Modelling for Fisheries. Through these activities, it contributes to the development of innovative solutions that reduce fisheries impacts while improving the scientific understanding needed for ecosystem-based fisheries management.

Giorgos Alexakis - Is the Vice-Governor of Crete (Greece) in charge of European and International Affairs. He holds a Diploma Degree in Civil Engineering from the Democritus Technical University of Greece and a Master of Science in Urban and Regional Planning from the London School of Economics and Political Science. His professional career began in 1991 as a civil engineer, city planner and environmentalist, and he has since been involved in the preparation and implementation of more than 100 projects at local, regional and European level. From 2001 to 2004, he served as Chief Executive Officer of the Heraklion Port Authority (Crete, Greece). Through his institutional and professional roles, Alexakis actively promotes sustainable, resilient and inclusive development for Europe’s maritime, insular and coastal regions.

Vasiliki Madoulka - Is the Head of the Department of European and International Affairs of the Region of Crete since 2021. After completing her studies at the Faculty of Education at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in the field of Early Childhood Education, she received an M.D in Cultural Management. She has attended a year seminar at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and acquired a certificate in the field of the Development of efficient management skills and human resources training. She also attended a five months seminar again at National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in the field of European policy of immigrants and acquired a certificate in managing multiculturalism along with educational practices.

Aliki Karousou - Is the Head of Fisheries Department in the Directorate of Rural Development in Region of Crete and in charge of small scale fisheries council, where diverse issues are discussed and decisions or actions are taken accordingly to Regional, National and European regulations and Strategies.

Aliki has been Scientific expert for several European projects where Region of Crete participated as partner, related to Fisheries, Circular Economy, Marine and Coastal tourism, Protected areas, Climate change and Biodiversity.

She is currently the local coordinator for the INTERREG IPA ADRION “INNOVABLUE” and collaborates with Region of Crete Innovation Business Observatory (ibo) which acts as the main tool for monitoring and supporting Smart Specialization Strategy (RIS3Crete).
