UdG contributes primarily to WP2: Improved Fisheries Observing System for Impact Assessment, through the preparation of a report on population structure based on the literature review and population genomics analyses of the selected species. This work helps to improve our understanding of marine biodiversity, population connectivity, and ecosystem dynamics, providing robust scientific evidence to support sustainable fisheries management, stock assessment, and conservation strategies.

In addition, UdG supports project coordination and management activities, facilitating the translation of scientific results into policy recommendations.

Meet the Team

Jordi Viñas de Puig - Has two main areas of research. The first and primary area is about the phylogeography, population genetics and conservation of pelagic fish. The second area of research is focused on the genetic control of the reproduction of aquaculture fish. He is a professor at the University of Girona and has participated in more than 25 projects.

Marta Caballero Huertas - She is biologist with a PhD cum laude with International Mention and Extraordinary Doctoral Award from the University of Girona (programme of Environmental sciences). Her scientific career has focused on research into the connection between genotype and phenotype in fish, especially in relation to key processes such as reproduction, the functioning of the immune system, parasitism, and the physiological condition of individuals. With this objective, she has developed an integrative approach based on the combined use of different omic approaches —including genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics— to understand the molecular mechanisms that regulate these processes. In parallel, she has shown interest in the genetic peculiarities of different natural stocks through population genetics approaches, to understand their variability, connectivity, and local adaptation, as well as their implications for fisheries management and the sustainable development of aquaculture. She has participated in 13 projects and 24 scientific papers.
